Hosted by the ever-curious Jason Mizen CFP®, episode 9 of TIA Talks brought together standout contestant and Season 11 Top 3 finalist Mmabatho Letoaba, and esteemed co-judge (and former winner) Nox Dlamini, for a conversation that was as honest as it was inspiring.
From breaking down the judging process to reflecting on personal growth, this episode unpacked the real impact of The Insurance Apprentice – not just as a competition, but as a launchpad for leadership in the South African insurance industry.
It’s not just TV – it’s training for the real world
While fans may only see a curated 30-minute episode, Nox revealed the immense amount of coaching, feedback, and mentorship that happens off-screen.
“You guys see the spicy snippets,” Nox shared, “but the mornings usually start with encouraging words and clear direction. So, when I blow up in the boardroom, it’s because I’ve said it before – and you’re not listening.”
Behind the “Cruella” moments lies a deep investment in contestant development. It’s all about preparing future leaders to thrive under pressure – because in the real world, performance isn’t about perfection, but about perseverance.
What makes a winner?
One of the most asked questions around TIA is how judging actually works. Mmabatho – like many past contestants – admits to pressing the judges for clarity post-elimination.
Nox broke it down:
- Each sponsor sets a clear brief and criteria, with no red herrings.
- Contestants are judged on how well they meet those criteria, plus:
- Leadership
- Presentation skills
- Group dynamics
- Insurance technical knowledge
- Innovation and adaptability
“You don’t have to be the team leader to lead,” Nox explained. “We watch how people step up and support their team – or don’t.”
Mmabatho’s moment
Mmabatho’s journey to the Top 3 was filled with grit and grace – and a little bit of buzzer-beating luck.
When asked about “beating” fellow contestant Anele in the challenge that saw her eliminated, Mmabatho was humble. “It wasn’t about beating her. That challenge was about speed and accuracy – and I happened to be ready. Anyone could’ve gone home that day.”
But the real win, she says, wasn’t the title. “It stopped being about winning. The exposure, the relationships, the growth – that became the real prize.”
The bigger picture: why TIA really matters
Beyond the boardroom scenes and industry buzz, TIA is doing something few other initiatives in the sector have achieved: it’s building a connected, capable, and confident new generation of professionals.
As Nox points out, the platform is about more than personal success: “We’re stretching people beyond what they think they’re capable of. And once you do that, you can never go back.”
The benefits don’t end with the show. Alumni gain access to mentors, opportunities, and a lifelong network that continues to grow in influence.
Raising the bar for the insurance industry
Jason summed it up best: “I want to see TIA blow up – I want to see the best of every corner of the industry come forward. Being on TV isn’t just for show anymore; it’s about putting your skills and your future on display.”
With growing national viewership and millions of impressions, The Insurance Apprentice is becoming more than a talent search. It’s a talent accelerator.
And as Mmabatho said: “Even if you don’t make the top 10, just entering will change the way you see yourself and your career.”
