TIA Talks S4E09: Growth Beyond Your Comfort Zone

Season 4 of TIA Talks continued with a powerful conversation that shifted the focus away from winning and toward something far more enduring: growth.

Hosted by Jason Mizen, this episode welcomed two of The Insurance Apprentice 2026 Top 3 finalists, Asanda Magwaza and Tyrell Moodley, for an honest reflection on their journey through the competition. While the winner’s story will be explored separately, this conversation highlighted an equally important truth: success is not defined solely by holding the trophy.

As Jason noted in his closing remarks, “Winning is only one measure of success.”

Throughout the discussion, Asanda and Tyrell shared insights into the challenges they faced, the personal breakthroughs they experienced, and the lessons they will carry forward long after the cameras stopped rolling.

Overcoming Self-Doubt

One of the most compelling themes of the conversation was Asanda’s candid reflection on imposter syndrome. Looking back on her journey, she admitted that she never expected to make it as far as she did. “I was shocked to make it to top 50.”

For much of the competition, Asanda found herself questioning whether she truly belonged among the contestants. Yet, as the competition progressed, she began to recognise that the biggest obstacle was not external criticism but her own internal dialogue.

“One thing about imposter syndrome is you disqualify yourself before the rest of the world does. You don’t even give the world a fair chance to judge you. You’re already judging yourself.”

Reflecting on watching herself back on screen, she made a surprising discovery. “What actually really shocked me is how much I was judging myself. And I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I’m judging myself more than anyone else is here.’”

The turning point came when the judges announced the rankings midway through the competition. “When the judges announced the rankings… that really shocked me, but it also showed me that I actually belong here and that I need to stop disqualifying myself so much.”

Her experience serves as a reminder that many professionals, regardless of experience or success, face moments of self-doubt. The challenge is not eliminating those feelings but learning not to let them dictate your potential.

The Power of Different Perspectives

Tyrell entered the competition with a very specific goal in mind. As an actuary, he wanted to challenge perceptions about what actuaries can contribute to the broader insurance industry.

“The reason I entered is that I believe that insurance companies are better served if the different professions can understand what each other does and at the same time work together to solve problems.”

Throughout the episode, Tyrell repeatedly returned to the importance of collaboration and interdisciplinary thinking. “The issue was never coming up with a solution, but it’s coming up with a solution where everyone’s on the same boat rowing in the same direction.”

For him, one of the greatest strengths of The Insurance Apprentice is its ability to bring together professionals from vastly different backgrounds and encourage them to solve problems collectively.

“What I realised working in that sort of environment was that a broker sees the client’s needs, an underwriter can go and see the risk, and an actuary can use the data and price a bit. You have this value chain where every person is bringing their skills.”

That diversity of thought, he believes, is essential if the industry wants to create meaningful solutions for South Africa’s unique challenges.

Teamwork Over Individual Ambition

As the competition progressed and the finish line came into view, both finalists acknowledged how easy it can be to become focused on personal success.

For Asanda, one of her biggest lessons came from recognising how ambition can sometimes overshadow collaboration. “When I got to top five now, I started wanting it, you know, as much as everyone else did.”

Looking back, she identified a critical moment of self-awareness. “Maybe I wanted it so bad that I neglected the team dynamic.”

That reflection became one of her most significant takeaways from the competition. “Once you start working as an individual and forget the team dynamic, that’s sort of where you actually lose it.”

The lesson extends far beyond reality television. “Even in a corporate setting, you will find people that you don’t gel well with, you don’t work well with, but at the end of the day, deliverables are deliverables, and they have to be met regardless of how you feel.”

Tyrell echoed this sentiment throughout the discussion. His leadership style was often characterised by calmness, mediation and bringing people together.

“You can have the best ideas, but if you’re the only one who wants to get there, it’s never going to work. You have to get people on board your ship and row in the right direction.”

A Mirror for Personal Growth

Perhaps one of the most profound observations from the episode was the idea that The Insurance Apprentice acts as a mirror. The competition places contestants under pressure, forces them into unfamiliar situations and exposes strengths and weaknesses that may otherwise remain hidden.

For Asanda, the experience was deeply transformative. “The internal change really shocked me.” She explained that while she entered the competition hoping to win, she left with something she never expected. “I didn’t go there saying, ‘I want to introspect. I want to be a better person. I want to communicate better. I want to work better with people.’”

Instead, those lessons emerged naturally through the experience itself. “These are all the things that I gained from TIA that I wasn’t anticipating I’d walk out of the competition with.”

Tyrell shared a similar perspective. The competition challenged him to step outside his comfort zone as a naturally introverted person. “Sometimes you need to get your voice heard.”

His biggest lesson was learning that there are moments when listening is not enough. “Sometimes you have to speak first rather than listen first.”

For both finalists, the growth they experienced internally became just as meaningful as their success in the competition itself.

Changing Perceptions of Insurance

Beyond personal development, the conversation also explored the broader role TIA plays in shaping perceptions of the insurance industry. Asanda spoke passionately about representation and visibility, particularly for younger generations. “Growing up I don’t think I had anyone that I looked at in the insurance space and said, ‘ This is who I’m inspired by’.”

Like many people, she only discovered insurance as a career option after entering the job market. “I found out about insurance only when I was in the job market and I was learning about all the roles that I can actually get into.”

Today, she hopes to become the role model she never had. “If I can be that face that a young person looks at and says, ‘I actually want to get into insurance. I want to get into risk management. I want to be like Asanda,’ that really is the goal.”

She also highlighted the importance of showing the human side of the industry. “There are people behind those claims, behind underwriting.”

For Tyrell, educating people about the value of insurance remains a key opportunity. “I think part of our mission is to spread that message to people.”

The discussion touched on the need for insurers to better understand diverse communities, listen to real-world experiences and design products that meet genuine needs. “I don’t think we’ve done that for the uninsured markets. And that is where this gap comes from.”

These insights reflect one of TIA’s broader objectives: helping the industry become more accessible, relatable and relevant.

More Than a Competition

As the conversation drew to a close, both finalists reflected on what comes next. Asked whether making the final proved she was the person she believed she could become, Asanda answered with renewed confidence.

“Yes, I do believe it.” Her ambitions remain firmly focused on the future. “I’m hoping I look back at this episode and the TIA episodes as an industry lead, as a thought leader.”

Tyrell, meanwhile, reflected on the journey with gratitude and perspective. “I’ve always believed that you can only control the factors that you can influence.” It is a philosophy that carried him through the competition and one that continues to guide him today.

Together, their stories demonstrate that The Insurance Apprentice is about far more than determining a winner. It is about discovering new strengths, embracing different perspectives, challenging assumptions and becoming better professionals and people along the way.

As Jason concluded: “Leadership, growth and resilience don’t belong exclusively to the person holding the trophy.”

This episode was a powerful reminder that sometimes the greatest victories are the ones that happen within ourselves.
