Task six sees the Apprentices put out some serious fires as they delve into a firewalk and demonstration at the Fire Protection Association of Southern Africa (FPASA). They were tasked to read through a risk survey report provided by Emerald Africa, assess the risk and the adverse risk exposures stated in the report, in comparison with the Risk Best Practice document, and produce a list of Risk Improvement Recommendations that should be presented to the broker and the insured (the panel of judges). In the fifth episode the contestants were tasked to perform a comprehensive environmental risk assessment regarding the company’s environmental exposures at its four sites. In the fourth episode the contestants had to conduct a social risk assessment. Socio-economic reasons, driven by the current political climate, lead to violent protests as well as the destruction of property. The contestants were tasked with conducting research about De Doorns in the Western Cape and Alexandra township in Johannesburg to find out what are the drivers of violent protests, possible solutions and key opportunities to support the communities in order to effect a decrease in Sasria’s risk exposure and mitigation of further claims.

The industry has shown that it is resilient, future thinking and ready to take on change. But the industry may face its biggest change yet, and it is not legislative, it’s generational. Episode two sees a hot debate with some heated audience engagement as the contestants are tasked with presenting their argument in favour of, or against, the motion of the topic ‘increasing the retirement age is good for the sustainability of the insurance industry’.

When we were in school, advancing through subjects, we often had questions of relevance of the content we studied in certain subjects to our future careers. This link is not always obvious. In episode one of The Insurance Apprentice 2020 the contestants had the opportunity to influence grade 11 learners at Westbury Secondary School in Johannesburg. In episode eight the winner of The Insurance Apprentice 2019 is announced.

The contestants were asked to act as employees of the FSCA, tasked with looking at the future of premium collections, and what needs to change around premium collection in the interests of the industry, the consumers and the institutions.

In episode six the contestants had the opportunity to influence a mix of grade 11 and 12 learners at Florida Park High School. The contestants were tasked with sharing some detail around two of the scarce and critical occupations in the insurance industry, namely an insurance broker and an underwriter and why there are great opportunities in the insurance industry for learners.

In episode five the innovative side of the contestants is tested. Traditional vehicle models are changing, this means less mechanical components and more electrical components requiring specialized technical skills for repairs. In their teams, the contestants are challenged to develop and price a warranty product for electrical vehicles.
